Meet the Owners: Cheryl and Neil MacLean

If you've stayed with us, you've probably met Cheryl or Neil in person — because one of us is usually the one handing you your arrival. We're Neil and Cheryl MacLean, and we own and run the Marmalade Motel on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. Not "own" in the sense of a name on a corporate filing somewhere. Own in the sense that we're on-site, we know which room has the best sunrise, and we're the ones you'll actually talk to if the hot tub needs a look.

How We Got Here

We opened the Marmalade Motel in April 2021 — which, if you're doing the math, means we launched a hospitality business in the middle of a global pandemic. Not the timing anyone would have picked on paper. But we saw an old roadside motel on this stretch of the Eastern Shore and a chance to do something different with it: keep the parts of a classic motel that actually work — pulling right up to your door, a real ocean view, no pretension — and get rid of the parts that didn't, like beige rooms and forgettable stays.

A few years in, that bet has paid off in ways we didn't expect, including being named Modern Hotel of the Year – Nova Scotia in the 2026 Travel & Hospitality Awards. We're proud of that. But honestly, the thing that means more to us day to day is hearing from guests directly — the ones who tell us the stay felt different because we were actually there for it.

What "Owner-Operated" Actually Looks Like

It means we're the ones checking rooms before you arrive. It means if you need an extra kettle for tea, or you've had a rough travel day and just need someone to be human about it, you're not going through a call centre — you're talking to us. We love hearing from our guests about what made their stay memorable, and more often than not, it's a small thing: a coffee delivered exactly when they needed it, an honest recommendation for dinner, a conversation on the deck that ran longer than planned.

That's not a business strategy we adopted. It's just how we'd want to be treated if we were the ones checking in somewhere new.

A Family Business, in More Ways Than One

The Marmalade isn't just the motel. Just down the road in Sheet Harbour is our daughter company run the Marmalade Café & Coffee Bar — a connected but distinct part of the Marmalade world, with its own warm, community-focused vibe.

So when we say "family-run," we mean it literally: this is genuinely a family operation, from the motel rooms in Port Dufferin to the coffee and pastries in Sheet Harbour.

Come Say Hi

We're easy to find — we're usually the ones behind the desk, or out checking on the hot tub, or grabbing coffee at the café.

If you're planning a stay on the Eastern Shore, we'd genuinely love to meet you.

There are some useful points in this article. It reminded me of another resource I saw recently, and some of the articles were surprisingly detailed: https://infowomenspace.com
