A Winter Weekend Getaway from Halifax: Oceanfront Escape on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore

You live in the HRM. You have a calendar full of things. You also want to be somewhere else for two nights.

Good news: that somewhere is under two hours from Halifax and Dartmouth, and winter is when it’s at its coziest.

The Eastern Shore in the cold months is quiet, moody and a little dramatic. The crowds are gone. The Atlantic is in a mood. And you can be checked into an oceanfront room with a private balcony before dinner. No flights, no ferry reservations, no packing for a week.

We’re The Marmalade Motel in Port Dufferin, and we stay open through winter for exactly this. Here’s how to do a weekend.

WHY THE EASTERN SHORE IS A GREAT WINTER WEEKEND GETAWAY FROM HALIFAX

  • Close enough to leave after work on a Friday. Port Dufferin is just under two hours from Halifax along the Marine Drive.

  • Quiet. Winter here means empty beaches, open trails and nobody asking you to queue for anything.

  • Properly different. It feels a world away from the city, even though you could technically be home in time for Sunday dinner.

  • Pet-friendly. Bring the dog. They’re welcome.

THE WEEKEND, SORTED

FRIDAY: LEAVE THE CITY, ARRIVE AT THE OCEAN

Head out after work and take the Marine Drive. Winter driving note: check road and weather conditions before you go, keep your tank topped up since services are spread out, and give yourself extra time if there’s snow in the forecast.

Check in, drop the bags and step out onto your balcony. Every motel room has a private balcony and an ocean view, so the unwinding starts about four minutes after arrival. Friday night ritual: bundle up and head to the firepit. Marshmallows optional, cold nose guaranteed, stars very much included. Then back inside to thaw out.

Not feeling like going out? Ask us about in-room dining for a cozy night in.

SATURDAY: COASTAL WALK, COFFEE, REPEAT

Start slow. Breakfast, a long coffee, nobody rushing you.

Then get outside. Taylor Head Provincial Park, near Spry Bay, is a rugged peninsula jutting into the Atlantic. The main gate typically closes in early December, but the park and coastal trails stay open year-round via Old Taylors Head Road. Trails aren’t maintained in winter, so wear proper footwear, dress in layers, tell someone your plan and keep dogs leashed. When conditions allow, it’s also a good spot for snowshoeing or a little cross-country skiing.

After the walk, warm up at our sister spot, Marmalade Café & Coffee Bar in Sheet Harbour. Locally sourced, ethically roasted coffee, baked goods, and a pizza menu that you won't want to miss.

Then head back for storm-watching (or just general watching) from the balcony. Atlantic winter weather puts on a show, and you get the good seat.

If you’re visiting in late November or December, add Christmas at Sherbrooke Village to the plan. It’s a heritage village that goes all out: tree lighting, carolers, craft vendors, workshops and Santa. Dates and ticketing change each year, so check sherbrookevillage.ca and book workshops early.

SUNDAY: ONE MORE SLOW MORNING

Sleep in. Have a proper breakfast. Take one last lap of the shoreline or one last coffee on the balcony. Check out, and be back in the HRM by mid-afternoon with your batteries recharged and your inbox none the wiser.

TIPS FOR A WINTER WEEKEND ON THE EASTERN SHORE

  • Check the forecast and road conditions before you leave. If a storm is on the way, build in a buffer day. Getting snowed in at the ocean is not the worst problem to have.

  • Pack layers, waterproof boots and a good hat.

  • Some attractions and restaurants run reduced winter hours, so confirm before you go.

  • Book direct for the best availability and any flexibility we can offer. Book here.
